Zelda “Witchy” Johnston

Zelda is a suburban housewife, who struggles with parenting, dieting, housework, and everything else in the real world.  Yes, she is a witch, but she says doing things by magic takes just as long as doing it the non-magical way, and is far less satisfying.   Zelda wears her “witchy’ garb all the time because not only is it traditional, but black is slimming.

Bill Johnston

a/k/a DAD

Dad has been married to Zelda for a LOOOooOOnnng time. He is very patient and supportive with all the crazy things she tries and never says, “I told you so.”  At least, he doesn’t say it very often.   Bill loves being a husband and father, and is often the voice of reason in the chaos of his household.   Outside the home, he works as a video game designer.

Bryan Johnston

a/k/a The Boy

Bryan is a 17 year old kid who loves to read books, play video games and see how much he can get away with under Witchy’s nose.

Louise Johnston

a/k/a The Girl

Louise is 13 years old and loves crafts, animals and helping Mom.  She has a quick mind and often surprises her family and friends with her insightful observations.

Tina “Toothfairy” Finster

a/k/a The Friend

Tina (or “TF” or “Teef”) has been Zelda’s friend since childhood.  She is very sensible and has a great ability to be calm in
emergencies.  It often falls to Tina to help Witchy get out of the situations they fall iino together.

Outside of being a part of the Johnston family, Tina works as the town’s local toothfairy for the Department of Magical Services and is dating Floyd Fleena, a fellow she met at work.

Floyd Fleena

a/k/a The Werewolf

Floyd is Tina’s boyfriend. He works in the IT department at the Dept. of Magical Services, where Tina works. He is a lycanthrope,which means he can turn into a werewolf. Unfortunately for Floyd, the medication doesn’t work very well for him and he “floofs” into werewolf form whenever he gets nervous or excited.

Floyd is a nerd in just about every way imaginable. He lives in constant joy that he is dating the girl of his dreams and is determined to enjoy it while it lasts.

Gladys

a/k/a The Dog

The family pet. Spends her time trying to understand the antics of her people. In general, she isn’t too bright. There is a lot to be said for unconditional love, though, and she gives that in abundance.
(note: Abner passed away during my break from the comic and it was difficult for our family. Since then, we have a new puppy, Dosh, but I have not yet decided whether to include the him in the comic.)

a/k/a Zelda’s Mom

Retired from government work, Mabel is now seeing the country as a long haul truck driver with her husband, Carlton. She likes the trucking life because she can see the grandkids more often and play more golf courses. She could care less about appearances and what’s fashionable…she’s all about comfort.

She loves her family, but would rather be on the road  headed toward the next golf course than spend lots of time visiting and “pokin’ her nose in” on family. (Zelda says Mabel still manages to stick her nose in often enough, thank you very much.) Doesn’t understand Zelda’s interest in magical things.

Carlton Cosmo

a/k/a Zelda’s Stepdad

Carlton is an avid golfer and was a great friend of Zelda’s dad when he was alive (Zelda’s dad passed away when Zelda was in high school).  He and Mabel fell in love on the golf course.  When Mabel retired, he is the one who suggested the trucking life might be for them.  They haven’t looked back since.

Carlton is an easy-going fellow and loves the family as if they were his own children and grandchildren.

Sylvia Johnston

a/k/a Bill’s Mom
Firm believer in the supernatural and sees signs and portents in the most mundane things. Thinks she can commune with the spirits of the dead.  Enjoys shopping more than anything and hunting down bargains is her passion.

She loves her grandkids unconditionally and enjoys listening to whatever they have to say.   Loves to show off the pictures of the grandkids she carries around in her wallet to anyone. Don’t get her started!

Outdoorsman and explorer, Edward has traveled the globe in pursuit of big game and big fish.  He has the stories to prove it., too!

Loves to show off pictures of  his quarries or catch. Remembers events by how good the hunting/fishing was and whether or not he “bagged” anything that day.
