Dallas Webcomic Expo 2010
Had a great time at the Dallas Webcomic Expo this weekend. The venue is a great place for a small trade show. Decent parking and walk space for the guests and great service (they bring us lunch!) and set up space for the presenters.
It was good to see my comic friends!
- I spoke with Chris Jeffery of Cartridge Comics and met his new bride! We were both experiencing our first con last year and we talked like veterans this year!
- The same with my dear comic friend Barry Buchanan of Don’t Feed the Geek. Barry brought the whole geek family out to the show and I love them to pieces. It was so good to chat with them again.
- Mark Largent of Wannabe Pirates was also there this year! I’m so glad I got to chat with him a bit more this year.
- Rebecca and James Hicks of Little Vampires were there! Whoo hoo! Having breakfast with them before the show started things off with a sunny feeling of webcomicky goodness! (As does any time any comicker can spend with them!)
- David Wilborn of Urban Jungle was next to me opposite Barry Buchanan. I love Urban Jungle and it was so great to meet him in person. He says this was his first con, but you wouldn’t know it if you were here.
- Amanda Harpold of Salt the Holly and But Not Really was here! She was my table neighbor last year and she was such a hoot! We weren’t too close this year, but she made a point of coming over to say hello. I loved seeing her again!
- And LOTS MORE! I loved browsing around the show floor, greeting and being greeted by the best creative community there is–Webcomickers!
On the non-comicker side, I met an old friend for the first time (you folk who have social lives online know EXACTLY what I mean by that) and our friends MsDarkstar and MrPOSSLQ. (SQUEEE!) They’ve all posted comments here or on the facebook page, which makes it a double joy that they came to see me! Whoo hoo!
About the show itself: It started off very slow traffic-wise. I was only ‘kinda’ concerned because I remember that happening last year. And JUST like last year, traffic REALLY picked up around the lunch hours and then tapered off once again. More people came to the show this year, though. It wasn’t packed so I could comfortably spend time chatting with anyone who wanted to stop. AND, I sold more than I have at the last two conventions combined. (Gives me hope that I can actually MAKE money one day soon! whoo hoo!)
My daughter, Hannah, was my right-hand man this trip. She was wonderful. I think it was a good experience all around or her. She said, “Mom, this is so fun. Everyone is so nice and EVERYONE KNOWS YOU!”
Actually, that may have been the case. I think I only pitched the comic two or three times. Just about everyone who came to the table to buy something said something like, “I remember you from last year and read your comic now.” Many folks said they made a point of coming to my table to buy something because they wanted to support me and the comic.
That is just the kind of love independent creators need to thrive. Thank you, DALLAS!!! And thank you to Thomas Overbeck, Michael Moreno and Jonathan Caustrita for the Dallas Webcomic Expo!
P.S. :
- I was too excited to remember to take pictures when folks bought my books. If you have a book, would you please take a picture of yourself and the book and send it to me to post on the site?
- Here are the pics I DID take.
- I also took a video.
- Here is MrPosslq’s write up of DWEX.
- MsDarkstar posts her thoughts on her Blog.
- Group Pic of the presenters.
- Flikr collection of DWEX pics.
- Brief write-up by Zombie Boy Comics, in which I’m called “charming”…YAY! I had a nice talk about webcomics with Mark Stokes.

Hope I didn’t come off as a total geeky fangirl but it was SO much fun to get to see you again this year & I’ve been trying to come up with some fabulous side business for both of us so we can stop worrying about the whole “day job” thing!
I did a writeup of DWEX on my blog, too… AND one of my readers commented that Life’s a Witch & Little Vampires were very cool (she followed my linkies!)
We need to get to STAPLE. Cuz once a year isn’t enough to see you!

It was SO great to see you again! I still loved the way your face just lit up when Ms. Darkstar and I introduced ourselves.
Thank you for the link to my blog entry, and for the traffic bump that will surely fade once they see my usual mundane ramblings…
Looking forward to seeing you again soon!
