STAPLE, Over and Done
We had such a great time at STAPLE this weekend. I truly couldn’t have done the 8-hour show without my helpers. Meet the goblins, Alex and Hannah! (Husband Michael is behind the camera, but there’s a pic of the whole crew in the album.)
We arrived early enough to have plenty of time and room to set up just right. Check out the new banner in front of the table. The frame holding it was pieced together by hubby using PVC pipe. I think he did a great job.
Here is a list of some of my highlights of the show:
- Seeing Rebecca and James Hicks of Lil’ Vampires. These two RADIATE enthusiasm for independent comics and media. Chatting with them is always such a joy. Rebecca made SUCH a wonderful pic of the Lil’ Vampires for my daughter. We are going to frame it and put it in her room. AND, Rebecca drew Witchy in Lil’ Vampires style!! OMG! I can’t wait to share this with you all. And I will as soon as my convention stuff is unpacked. (Hannah hasn’t even see her pic yet. Trust me, dear…it’s awesome.)
- Having a table next to Frank Ziegler of Kidd and Geezer. Frank got his table thanks to a cancellation. LUCKY ME! He was not only my “printing buddy” (we were twittering to each other as we were making the final prints of our mini-comics), we shared lessons learned and things we want to try for next time.
- Barry of Don’t Feed the Geek came by the show with his family! I had met them all at DWEX last fall and enjoyed them so much. Having them come by my table SPECIFICALLY to say hi to me and meet my crew made me so happy.
- Nate Bramble of Hermit Hill coming by the table to say hi! (SQUEEE!) He was at DWEX and I was too shy to go up and say hello, if you will recall. At STAPLE, I was just too busy! My son made a POINT of going over because he is a fan. When son came back and said, “Look what I got!” and it was Legend of Hermit Hill! I sent son back to Nate with my business card to say he was my son. *chuckle* Nate, being a true gentleman, came to ME instead.
- Meeting folks and seeing the immediate response to my comic. The absolute BEST thing. People would pick up my flyer and read it at the table. I would hold my breath until they chuckled. And they DID! It was so busy in our room that aisles got bottle-necked now and then, but that meant people were stopping at tables to browse and chat. One pretty lady came by and told me she had followed my link on the STAPLE exhibitors page and then read through the whole archive on my site. She declared herself a new fan of Life’s a Witch! When she left the table, my kids said, “Mom, that’s so cool!” Another couple came by my table and made nice comments and then moved on to see the rest of the show. I was so humbled that they came back AFTER seeing all that other awesome to purchase a copy of my “Cold Hands, Warm Heart” mini comic.
- Getting general comments on my art. “Nice linework.” “Your art is so clean.” “You do nice work.” Of course most people are polite enough to not say something negative, but the amount of good words was very encouraging. One gentleman took a moment to specifically tell me how much he liked my flyer and the mini comic. He wasn’t interested in buying, he said, but if I’d had a collection he’d be “all over it.” So that’s the goal for next year. To have an actual finished collection of strips to sell! Also, the art cards were a surprise hit. These are little postcards with my pen-and-ink drawings. I got a lot of “Nice Work” comments on those and sold a handful. (The mermaids and puppies in the “Daily Mini Sketch” in the right sidebar sold at the show!) One fellow recognized RIGHT OFF that my steam-punk space captain was the result of a failed attempt at drawing a conquistador. HAHAH I think he got a chuckle at my flub, but appreciated how I tried to save the drawing. He had his picture taken with me (send me a copy!), too, which was way cool.
Once again, I did not see/speak with everyone I wanted to…it was just too busy (or I was too tired by late afternoon!). I didn’t go to the after party as I originally intended, either. My cheeks were tired from all the smiling and my other cheeks were tired from all the sitting!
I did remember to take a few pics of folks who bought items from my table, though! They are all in my album. If you bought something or took a flyer at STAPLE, send me a pic of you holding it up so I can add it to my album!
