Ring Ring

The water whistling through the pipe when I’m taking a shower sounds like a phone ringing…or else it sounds like one of the dogs getting into something it shouldn’t. I swear that today, I heard a sound like a bat. Not a real bat, but that squeaky noise they use in cartoons. I once heard an old-time comedian say he had a job with a plumber. It was his job to install the thing in the shower head that sounds like a phone ringing and everyone in the audience laughed.

Which means I’m not the only one this happens to! When I showed this strip to the kids, they thought, “huh?” They swear up and down that they’ve never thought the phone was ringing when they were in the shower.

The combination of water running through pipes and the extractor fan in my bathroom often sounds like a ringing phone. I’ve left the bathroom to find there was no call on many occasions.

Hmm, so this was supposed to me Mrs Wet Robe instead another contest? :XD *sorry, couldn’t resist*

Getting such a sprinkler into the face can pretty hurt. Don’t try this at home or at least don’t stand in the firing arc. ;)

I had this idea that there was a word for hearing sounds in the middle of white noise… but I can’t find it. Google has failed me!

Good morning, all!

Francisco, welcome back! It was just such an interrupted shower which was the inspiration for this strip. I just know that the ONE time I ignore the sound, it will be something I should have gotten out to investigate.

Cemalidor: If Zelda had any brains, she’d have turned off the water line first. She is very..er.. single-minded. I think she should just wear a helmet at all times.

Nyct: I bet there IS a word for it.

Readers of Earth! Your mission is to find the word for hearing sounds in the middle of white noise. LaWer Reader Powers… ACTIVATE!

FUNNY. I have done that several times in my shower..I hear a ringing sound…

Hi, Debbie! Thank you for posting (I can’t wait for the kids to read these comments.)

Nycteris: I did find this entry on “Phantom Rings” on Wikipedia. But I still think there’s a more scientific type term, don’t you?

Guess the power of witchcraft can’t compare to the pure evil of busted plumbing!

Maybe you should change the shower head? I’ve never had that happen to me before (the ringing), but by changing the head to a water-saving one (I use the Oxygenics one; best decision I’ve ever made), that might get rid of the ringing.

Besides, Zelda (and you ;) ) love helping out the Planet, non?

@DadaHyena: You put your finger on it! HAhahaha Plumbing is extremely evil when it’s not working properly.

Ketira: If water-saving showerhead works as well as the water-saving toidy, I don’t want one (see my comment to DadaHyena). Hahahaha Actually, I just changed the showerhead in my shower recently. The “ringing” sound isn’t actually a real sound. It’s just you (or rather, the person in the shower) interpreting a certain pitch of the sound of water as it’s rushing through the pipes. You can also get the sensation when you’re running a vacuum cleaner (that one gets me all the time).

Before attempting home repairs, be sure you have these things handy: safety goggles, a hard hat, and the phone number for the repair person! LOL! Oh, and a first aid kit. And 911 on speed dial.
I haven’t heard strange noises in the shower, but I have experienced what sounded like people talking when the radio is on (playing classical music) and I’m in a certain area of the house. As I move to another room, it goes away. Odd acoustics. And, no, it’s not haunted — as far as I know. ;)

I bet you have a metal and ceramic tub, don’t you?

Rapid movement of water droplets striking the tub will sometimes cause the *tub* to ring like a bell, but only if the shower head is positioned a certain way.

That’s my story and I’m sticking with it! ~_^

Thank you for the welcome back. I feel a bit of a fraud because I haven’t been away.

*grin* Consider it a “welcome back” to your avatar, then. I am so glad to know you’ve been reading along. <3

I have learned to bring my cell phone and my land line phone into the bathroom when I shower. Just because it always rings when I am soaking wet. I have noticed the vacuum cleaner and most frustrating my blow dryer, I am always turning it off and on straining to hear if it was a phone ringing. Glad to see it is not only me. Kids, what do they know any way.

PattiT: Of course! The blow dryer! I had forgotten about that one! There’s also the air conditioner (I always think someone is talking or moving around the house when the a/c is on and I’m trying to drift off to sleep.)

Maybe you’re right… but I’ve never heard that when running either appliance (shower or vacuum); I guess my ears “know” those sounds aren’t a ringtone, and I usually stop when I’m running a vacuum. (When I’m in the shower, I let the voicemail take over. :p ) I guess it’s my cat-like hearing…. *shrugs*

LOL, you’re one of the lucky ones. I think one of the main reasons I hear it is that I *expect* to be interrupted in some way, so I’m always waiting for it. One of these days, you (and my kids) will have the sensation and go, “OH! So THAT’s what Samantha was talking about!”
