Sugar Ninja Anthology
ATTN: GIRL COMICKERS
Thanks to technical glitches, the Sugar Ninja project will remain open for submissions for 2 more weeks! This is a project spearheaded by Bob Pendarvis, the creator of the Sequential Art Program at the Savannah College of Art and Design, in which female comic artists will be showcased to show that we’re out there doing just as fine work in the field as the boys!
Below is a note Mr. Pendarvis posted on Facebook, which I have reproduced with his permission:
dear girls,
thanks to technical delays, i’m still waiting another two weeks to get the sugar ninjas, my all-girls comics/illustration anthology, uploaded to lulu.com. as a result, i’m sending another request to see if any more of you would care to participate. we currently have 110 girls and there are actually going to be two books comprising the first collection (one girly-girl, the other…not so much, lol).
by the way, if you are ALREADY a sugar ninja, thanks so much and i’m sorry for all the delays. we had problems with people sending in low-rez and wrong-sized art. one more time, for everyone, here are the specs:
the books are landscape format and the printing area will be 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 per page of the book, which will allow for wide angle illustrations/comics or two vertical comic pages/illustrations at 4 x 6 1/2 with a gap of 1/2 inch in-between. we’d like the art to be scanned at 300 dpi jpgs and color pages should be grayscaled (but WE can do that for you, too).
these books feature mostly sequential art majors, but there are a few animation and illustration majors, as well (and even a few FRIENDS of scaddies from outside the country). i’m very proud of this group and the diversity of styles, genres, formats: western styled comic book stories, manga, action-adventure, humor, horror, comedy, romance, experimental, comic strips, children’s picture books, text-only stories, illustrations, character designs, concept art, and dollfie photo comics…whew!
the books will now premiere at DRAGON CON and AWA in atlanta this september. the books are a great big showcase for promoting the seeminly not-so-obvious idea that girls deserve to be given the same attention as guys when it comes to creating comics. there will be contact info for all the girls and we are putting together an accompanying website, too.
if you’re interested in sending in material, remember that ALL copyrights belong EXCLUSIVELY to you girls. you are only allowing me to use them for the anthology, not relinquishing your rights. also, the books are being priced to SELL at ONLY the cost of manufacturing (about $13.00 apiece for two books with about 400 double-sized pages). the idea is to keep the books cheap enough that people will order them online, but also allow any of the girls in the book to order their OWN copies to sell themselves at higher prices (especially if they personalize the books with sketches).
you can write me here for more info, or at this e-dress: anabunni@gmail.com
new material, older work…i’d be happy with whatever you’re happy with. i just want as many girls as possible and as many different types of stories/art. even if you don’t decide to be a part of the book, i hope you’ll check it out when we finally announce that it’s ready to go. we have a great mix of established professionals and talented newcomers—and i hope you’ll be one, too!
and, for some of you sugar ninjas who have turned in work already, feel free to send me more work! it’s been awhile since i first collected some of it and many of you might prefer more recent examples (plus, i’d love to see what you’ve been doing this summer).
bob:)
