Taking 4th of July Weekend Off!
No comic today as I’m taking the day off for an extended 4th of July weekend. What’s the point of working for yourself if you can’t take a day off to enjoy? (Just because I only post two days a week doesn’t mean I don’t work every day! I don’t, but it doesn’t MEAN that!)
Hopefully, I’ll come back next week with some awesome comics and extras!
In the meantime, I thought I’d share some thoughts about the Universe of Life’s a Witch and the characters that I have in my mind, but don’t appear in the comic…
- Tina is the top Tooth Fairy at the Department of Magical Services. She gets offers from private magical services companies all the time, though. She likes to visit the commercial companies and see how they do things, but she loves working for the town.
- Tina’s mother died when Tina was a toddler (sometimes I think it was a car accident, sometimes I think it was cancer).
- Zelda’s father died of a heart attack when Zelda was in high school.
- Zelda and Bill met in college.
- Tina’s father is an orthodontist. They are Jewish, but don’t practice.
- Magic is deliberately difficult due to the ancient “Mother Nature Accords.” Mother Nature decided that magic was being practiced too freely and easily and took her complaints to court. (I have toyed with doing a side comic or story on the trial.) That is why Zelda says it’s easier to do things the regular way than all the preparation now required to work magic. It’s also why magical items are so expensive.
- If there is a “theme” to Life’s a Witch, it’s that there are magical things going on all the time, but we’re so used to them we don’t see it…so real life is magical. You just have to look for it. The tag line for the strip used to be (and still is, I suppose) “A Quest for Magic in the Real World.”
- Tina is a fairy and so a naturally magical being. Because of all the magic use before the Mother Nature accords, there are lots of magically created races that have intermarried with the regular human folk. It is not unusual for a fairy, or werewolf, or pixie, or troll to be born to human parents. No one thinks anything of mixed marriages in this universe.
- Nowadays, magic use is like a combination art and science. All it takes is some practice and a bit of schooling and anyone can do it. Zelda majored in Commercial Applications of Potion Magic in college.
- Bill is a video game designer.
- Abner, the yellow dog in the comic, died of a stroke when the real Abner did… I didn’t have the heart to put it in the comic. He is just not in any of the strips now. Gladys is still around, tho!
That’s just the stuff that came to mind today.
