Free Car

Yes, the corny jokes were just a break for me.  Now it’s time to get back to the family and see what’s going on!

In the tradition of not looking a gift horse in the mouth.. Witchy and Bill just say THANK YOU to Edward (Bill’s dad) for giving Bryan a car.  But it is kinda scary to get a fixer-upper when you don’t know anything about fixer-upping.

I grew up with my dad tinkering on our cars all the time…when I grew up and moved away, I’d always call him when the car broke down and he’d give me several things to try to do to the car to get it running again.  When I married, I just assumed my husband knew how to fix things too. It seemed “unmanly” NOT to know.  I learned that not only did my husband not know how to fix things, his dad didn’t either! *gasp* (I am happy to report that husband has become quite handy over the years and can do just about anything around the house or car that isn’t too major. )

About today’s strip:  I tried to do the whole thing in Manga Studio Debut 4. I still just love the way the the brush tool looks. Unfortunately, I needed to speed up so exported the inks and did the color, text and background shapes in Photoshop.

Those lines do look very brush-like; I can see why you enjoy the brush tool. Manga Studio doesn’t handle color, though, does it? (I thought it only had b&w screen tones.)

I’m not a particularly handy handyman, either, btw. My wife gave me a power drill for our anniversary last year. It was a message… :)

I would think that a car that’s sat that long wouldn’t work.

I don’t know about cars.

How do you join this site and log in?

(Example, Chris Watkins has one, and he has his icon showing. How do I do that?)

Chris: This version of Manga studio actually does color, I just find it not as smooth as photoshop, less options. LOL at wife’s “message”! *sends a handyman help book*

Seshiru: The avatars aren’t on the Life’s a Witch site! They’re from gravatar.com. Register your preferred email address at that site and pick your avatar. Then whenever you comment on a blog that uses the service, your personal avatar will appear. On Life’s a Witch, if you don’t have a gravatar (“globally recognized avatar”), it just picks a random one from a specific list.

I have never been “mechanically inclined”, that was the work for either my older brother or my father. I was the “less manly” of the two. As the years rolled by, I have learned a few things about a few things, but don’t ask me to work on your car unless you want it to never work again.

I took Auto Shop in high school as an elective. I got an A. I was the only girl in class who wasn’t afraid of getting her hands dirty. I listen to “Car Talk” on NPR, even though I don’t own a car. It’s just darn fun. I enjoy working with my hands. Whether a car stored for 50 years will run depends on storage conditions. The mechanical parts might be just fine, but the hoses have likely decayed with age. If the “boys” are willing to take it on, this could be a great project. And a 50-year old model? It might be really cool looking.:)

Samantha:
I love your comic! I can’t wait to look at it every week. I’m so excited about your car storyline. I have 3 kids, and my oldest is a 14 year old boy who is talking non-stop about getting his first car in “just” 2 years when he gets his license. It has been really amusing to see his wheels turn as he realizes that the $200 he has saved will pretty much buy a frame only!! Can’t wait to see where you take this storyline.

Greetings, all!

Dale: Hubby is that way. He can do the maintenance-type stuff and one or two other things, but for anything else, we have to go to a mechanic.

JoanH: I am LOL that you took Auto Shop and have never owned a car. I’m glad you said that about the hoses. I had no idea whatsoever what would need to be fixed.

Paige L: Welcome! And thank you for that wonderful post. It is always such a boost when people take a moment to make a comment. *Chuckle* at your son. My daughter is 13 and is also counting down the minutes. My son, though, doesn’t seem to be in that much of a hurry. The current system works fine for him, he says! HAHAHA! (He was the same way about potty training.)

You ever gonna post again in the Dumok forums?

hahahah! Maaaaaybe… (I’d forgotten I’d dropped in there.)
