Caricature

For the Sketch Out, the assignment was to attempt a caricature of a famous person.. NO TRACING!  Can you tell who the person below is supposed to be? Hint: Old time movie actress. (Scroll down for answer.)

My First Caricature

My First Caricature

Well, I think for my first one it’s okay. At least you can tell it’s a person! I have to say, I thought this assignment was very hard and I went into it kicking and screaming.  But once I got over myself and realized that the Sketch Outs are exercise and are supposed to work out my skills, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work.  I am so glad I did this..not because I think this is a great caricature, but because I got such satisfaction out of rising to the challenge.   I enjoyed it so much, I think I will try more caricatures on my own.

Answer: Bette Davis.

Your drawing reminds me of Al Hirschfeld’s work. Not to shabby, indeed, Samantha.

eep! That was supposed to read “Not too shabby, Samantha. Indeed.” (stupid fingers not listening to brain again. *grumble*)

LOL at the correction, Dale.

I am going to have to web search Al Hirschfeld!

He’s a famous caricature artist that used to draw all of the famous people in his time. At one time, his drawings were in frames lining the wall of a restaurant in New York City.

He is very famous! When I searched images by him, I recognized the style right away. I really like it…lots more minimal than what I did though. Maybe for my next one, I should try it in his style!

Give it a shot. It looks to me that you’ve a good start already at mimicking his style.
