Sketch Out’s First Exercise

Heres Louise!

Here's Louise!

Well the sketch group has its first exercise posted and it was chosen by yours truly. The exercise was to draw a bunch of stick figures in motion then choose one pose to make into a finished image. (Yes, it’s from How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. Real artists usually scoff that I use this book, but for us NON-professionally trained folk who are just learning, it’s a really fun way to learn the basics.)

While not technically in motion, I chose a stick figure in an unusual pose. The hardest one of the figures I drew. I’m kinda proud that it came out as well as it did. I think I do okay when I slow down and actually focus on the basics.  You can see the original stick figure in the inset.  Click the image for a close up.

If you’d like to join the Sketch Out, it’s open to everyone! Just sign up! If you’d just like to do the exercise, go ahead! If you send it to me, I’ll share it with folks here at Life’s a Witch. Of course, you can always do the sketches in your sketchbook at home, but we’d still love to have you join in on the discussion.

What do you think of my sketch?

No offence, but I thought you turned your daughter into a frog, the way she was sitting.

I agree that has to be a hard pose to draw (speaking as a non-drawing artist).

Keep up the hard, but fulfilling work!

No worries, Dale! I was going to have her saying, “RIBBIT!”

I might take that stick figure and try to draw Golem from “The Hobbit” sitting on a rock. I think I saw a painting like that somewhere.

Do you mean Gollum from Lord of the Rings? That would be something to see, as pug-ugly as he was and in your style.

All I can say is “Good Luck!”

LOL! yes..he was in The Hobbit, too!(However he’s spelled.)
I made it a personal challenge to draw him using the same stick figure I used for the picture of Louise above. What do you think? (Click the image for a close-up.)

That’s pretty good! A good visualization of the character. That would make a good enough graphic for putting into a children’s interpretation of the story. Good work, Samantha!

Thanks! I was pretty surprised at myself. I think if I had made the stick figure with Gollum in mind, the proportions would be more “hobbity.”

Nice!

Mr. Meval!! It is good to hear from you again! I am glad you liked the sketches.
