A Healthy Snack?!

Generally speaking, I do not like fruit.  Actually, anything with “healthy” associated with it seems to turn my taste buds off. (Kind of like “educational” shows turn my children’s attention off.)

Since my (annual) resolution is to lose 50lbs, I would like to find something healthy to snack on while reading or computing that I actually WANT.

We got a free sample of Today’s Farm Freeze-dried Strawberries over the weekend.  Hubby took them to work to snack on at his desk  I just received an ICQ from him saying he LOVED them.  I told him to order a case as  I would like to try them (and if I don’t like them, I know he will eat them.)

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or better yet, what do YOU snack on when you feel peckish? Do you find you always want a snack when you are doing certain things (reading, watching TV, on the computer, drawing, etc.)?

Since I stopped smoking in 2008, I gained a few kilos (sorry, I can’t think other than in metric system :P ), so I am on a diet too. During winter, whan I am at work, I mostly snack on carrots, that I cut in sticks, oranges and tangerines, and I have a cup of yogurth with corn flakes (with no sugar) as an evening meal. It also helps my belly feeling better, if you know what I mean…

Popcorn works for me, just don’t get the buttered kind and do get the make-it-yourself kind. If you want to season it, use Mrs. Dash seasonings instead of butter. I’m not sure, but I think there is a seasoning for popcorn called Butter Buds that is supposed to taste like butter on popcorn without all the “bad stuff” in it. That’s my $.02 worth on the matter.

Hello and Welcome, Gilden! This may sound dumb, but I have often thought of taking up smoking to lose weight! LOL! Man, it must be hard to have to give up smoking then change your diet at the same time too! ARRGH!

Dale, I’ve done the plain popcorn thing and the rice cake thing (remember those?). I just can’t do that any more. The taste isn’t good enough to support my feeble will power.

If I could just get out of those situations where I always like to have a snack… Like here at the computer! ARRGH!

having two little kids underfoot (sometimes literally), one of whom seems to have a nearly-bottomless stomach and nearly-infinite metabolism, we always have some kind of healthy snack laying around. my favorite is a variety of dried fruits (apples, mango, apricot, etc.).

Hi, RunswithLightning!

GOSH, I wish I liked fruit. We have it around for my husband and daughter, who love fruit. Son and I.. we just plain don’t like the taste.

Unlike my son, I can eat it, though. But know how I eat fruit? With SALT on it. Grosses husband out completely.

I’d like to lose weight too but it seems an impossible task.
Best advice, stop thinking diet, stop thinking must lose weight. Maybe a mind set thing … reverse psych and all that. Drink water every hour, steer clear off fat free and low fat they are packed with sugar. Try lettuce leaves with salady things inside like a sandwich and plenty of tomato and veg soup, that stuff won’t hurt at all!

Hi, Bernice! Thank you for coming by! It is hard for me to drink water, but I know you are right. Your lettuce advice reminded me of something… Someone once gave me a great tip to use lettuce leaves instead of taco shells when we make tacos. I tried it once and it was DELISH! I need to do that again.

i like a handfull of pretzels or baked chips (any kind) mind i have large hands so its a pretty big handful i eat anything i want to i just go for smaller portions then i want and remember to munch on fruit canned pineapple tastes like candy

Welcome, Shygryphon! I have never tried baked chips! I am going to add that to my list. Maybe I can get the kids to eat those, too! (And that’s something I have to consider.. It’s very hard for me to snack on healthy stuff, when no one in the house is.. especially when we all find the NON healthy stuff tastier! Hahahaha!)

Several years ago, I tried “banana” chips.. dehydrated banana slices. They weren’t too terrible. Maybe I should look into those, too.

I’m starting a ‘lets try and lose a few lbs’ chapter in my life on Monday. Oh I hate exercise but it’s the key to weight loss. And less food of course. Maybe we could make origami out of lettuce leaves together?
